Biometric IDs For Every Indian Citizen

Slashdot - Thu, 2010-09-09 13:42
wiedzmin writes "This month, officials from the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), armed with fingerprinting machines, iris scanners and cameras hooked to laptops, will fan out across the towns and villages of southern Andhra Pradesh state in the first phase of the project whose aim is to give every Indian a lifelong Unique ID (UID) number for 'anytime, anywhere' biometric authentication. While enrolling with the UIDAI may be voluntary, other agencies and service providers might require a UID number in order to transact business. Usha Ramanathan, a prominent legal expert who is attached to the Center for the Study of Developing Societies in the national capital, said that, 'taken to its logical limit, the UID project will make it impossible, in a couple of years, for an ordinary citizen to undertake a simple task such as traveling within the country without a UID number.' Next step, tying that UID number and biometric information to to their RIM BlackBerry PIN number."pa href="http://www.facebook.com/sharer.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fyro.slashdot.org%2Fstory%2F10%2F09%2F09%2F0024239%2FBiometric-IDs-For-Every-Indian-Citizen" target="_blank" title="Share on Facebook"img src="http://a.fsdn.com/sd/facebook_icon_large.png"/a a href="http://twitter.com/home?status=Biometric+IDs+For+Every+Indian+Citizen%3A+http%3A%2F%2Fbit.ly%2Fd1bEnV" target="_blank" title="Share on Twitter"img src="http://a.fsdn.com/sd/twitter_icon_large.png"/a/ppa href="http://yro.slashdot.org/story/10/09/09/0024239/Biometric-IDs-For-Every-Indian-Citizen?from=rss"Read more of this story/a at Slashdot./piframe src="http://slashdot.org/slashdot-it.pl?op=discussamp;id=1781384amp;smallembed=1" style="height: 300px; width: 100%; border: none;"/iframeimg width='1' height='1' src='http://slashdot.feedsportal.com/c/32909/f/530758/s/d985bf5/mf.gif' border='0'/ pa href="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/S5n65N_gnyBGc1NvTnJ0CBskoBw/0/da"img src="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/S5n65N_gnyBGc1NvTnJ0CBskoBw/0/di" border="0" ismap="true"/img/abr/ a href="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/S5n65N_gnyBGc1NvTnJ0CBskoBw/1/da"img src="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/S5n65N_gnyBGc1NvTnJ0CBskoBw/1/di" border="0" ismap="true"/img/a/pimg src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/Slashdot/slashdot/~4/R8XYh_bGQRs" height="1" width="1"/

Police detonate suspicious toy pony

Boing Boing - Thu, 2010-09-09 13:36

From the Orlando Sentinel: A “suspicious” toy pony was blown up after it was found abandoned in the middle of a cul-de-sac near an Orange County elementary school this morning.

The FurReal pony, an expensive, life-like toy, was investigated as a possible explosive device after someone called Orange County deputies to report it. A robot inspected the toy before a pack of explosives was placed near the stuffed animal and detonated. For some reason Orlando and Cincinnati are mother lodes of wonderful stories.

Report: Abu Ghraib photos Obama is censoring "show rape" and sexual torture of men, women, and children

Boing Boing - Thu, 2010-09-09 13:10
Major General Antonio Taguba, the former army officer who conducted the Abu Ghraib inquiry, confirms that rape and sexual abuse are documented in the photographs that US president Barack Obama has ordered censored. From the Daily Telegraph: At least one picture shows an American soldier apparently raping a female prisoner while another is said to show a male translator raping a male detainee.

Further photographs are said to depict sexual assaults on prisoners with objects including a truncheon, wire and a phosphorescent tube.

Another apparently shows a female prisoner having her clothing forcibly removed to expose her breasts. One of those incidents reportedly involved a 15-year-old male victim.

Maj Gen Taguba retired in January 2007, and supports the President's decision to ban the images:

These pictures show torture, abuse, rape and every indecency. I am not sure what purpose their release would serve other than a legal one and the consequence would be to imperil our troops, the only protectors of our foreign policy, when we most need them, and British troops who are trying to build security in Afghanistan. The mere description of these pictures is horrendous enough, take my word for it. Full story here.

FSF: Nothing Can Excuse Oracle's Patent Aggression

Groklaw - Thu, 2010-09-09 11:00
FSF has issued a href=http://www.fsf.org/news/oracle-v-googlea statement/a about Oracle's patent infringement lawsuit against Google over Android. While Google could have avoided all this by using the GPL'd IcedTea and they have yet to take a stand against software patents, still nothing, FSF writes, can excuse Oracle's patent aggression. Oracle is wrong to use its patents to attack Android, FSF concludes. P They have a number of suggestions on how they think you can help, including searching for prior art. The result of all this, unless Oracle changes course, will be, FSF points out, that everyone will dump Java:blockquote Programmers will justifiably steer clear of Java when they stand to be sued if they use it in some way that Oracle doesn't like. One of the great benefits of free software is that it allows programs to be combined in ways that none of the original developers would've anticipated, to create something new and exciting. Oracle is signaling to the world that they intend to limit everyone's ability to do this with Java, and that's unjustifiable./blockquote If you have prior art, you can place it here or on the a href=http://en.swpat.org/wiki/Oracle_v._Google_(2010,_USA)End Software Patents wiki/a, as they suggest, or both.

DHS CyberSecurity Misses 1085 Holes On Own Network

Rackspace Shuts Down Quran-Burning Church's Sites

The center 'violated the hate-speech provision of our acceptable-use policy,' explained Rackspace spokesman Dan Goodgame. 'This is not a constitutional issue. This is a contract issue,' said Goodgame, who added he did not know how long it had hosted the church's sites. Slashdot - Thu, 2010-09-09 00:33
thelostagency writes "Girish Kumar, managing director of Aiplex Software says his company is being hired by the film industry to attack online pirates. He says if a provider did not do anything to remove the link or content hosted on its site, his company would launch what is known as a denial-of-service (DoS) attack on the offending computer server. From the article: 'Kumar said that at the moment most of the payment for his company's services came from the film industry in India. "We are tied up with more than 30 companies in Bollywood. They are the major production houses." As for Hollywood films, he said they, too, used his services.'"pa href="http://www.facebook.com/sharer.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fyro.slashdot.org%2Fstory%2F10%2F09%2F09%2F0047234%2FFilm-Industry-Hires-Cyber-Hitmen-To-Take-Down-Pirates" target="_blank" title="Share on Facebook"img src="http://a.fsdn.com/sd/facebook_icon_large.png"/a a href="http://twitter.com/home?status=Film+Industry+Hires+Cyber+Hitmen+To+Take+Down+Pirates%3A+http%3A%2F%2Fbit.ly%2Fc0C5pi" target="_blank" title="Share on Twitter"img src="http://a.fsdn.com/sd/twitter_icon_large.png"/a/ppa href="http://yro.slashdot.org/story/10/09/09/0047234/Film-Industry-Hires-Cyber-Hitmen-To-Take-Down-Pirates?from=rss"Read more of this story/a at Slashdot./piframe src="http://slashdot.org/slashdot-it.pl?op=discussamp;id=1781392amp;smallembed=1" style="height: 300px; width: 100%; border: none;"/iframeimg width='1' height='1' src='http://slashdot.feedsportal.com/c/32909/f/530758/s/d917396/mf.gif' border='0'/ pa href="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/MFYZ-25qgt0hha9Ye1M4A4GxloE/0/da"img src="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/MFYZ-25qgt0hha9Ye1M4A4GxloE/0/di" border="0" ismap="true"/img/abr/ a href="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/MFYZ-25qgt0hha9Ye1M4A4GxloE/1/da"img src="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/MFYZ-25qgt0hha9Ye1M4A4GxloE/1/di" border="0" ismap="true"/img/a/pimg src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/Slashdot/slashdot/~4/WUZLIl76j0o" height="1" width="1"/
